Two of the newest events on the annual Albany music calendar showed off students individual abilities this winter. Albany Middle School music students offered two nights of solo and small ensemble performances at the AHS Little Theater February 12-13, and Albany High School vocal students performed solos and small group pieces at the Little Theater on February 27.
AMS band director Rich Chisholm organized the “Albany Middle School Band Solo & Ensemble Recital” for a second consecutive year, expanding the program to two nights and incorporating many more performers. Sixth grade Cobra Band students performed Wednesday, February 12, and seventh and eighth grade musicians from the Concert and Symphonic bands performed Thursday, February 13, in the. Ms. Li-Wen Monk accompanied many of the students on piano. AMS Band Director Rich Chisholm mentioned that he had helped students select appropriate music, but that they had really prepared their pieces on their own, taking responsibility for their own performances.
AMS/AHS vocal music director Mary Stocker introduced the “First Annual Vocal Showcase” on Thursday, February 27, featuring solo performances by students, many accompanying themselves on keyboard or guitar. Small groups also performed, including both girls’ and boys’ small a cappella ensembles. The night was rounded out with preview performances from the school musical, Guys and Dolls, and a set from Rhythm Bound, the AHS R&B group.
With most performances during the year focusing on large ensemble work, these concerts allowed students to really show how they have developed as musicians individually. Congratulations to all the students on a job well done, and thanks to all who helped make these performances possible.
